One such system is called adaptive cruise control or collision mitigation. Previously, cruise control just set a constant speed for the vehicle without the need to depress the gas pedal. Now, these new systems use a combination of sensors and radar which mean that the throttle and brakes ensure you keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, which is vital if there are changes in the speed of the traffic.
In addition, if the system feels that there is a potential collision it will brake hard and also tighten the seatbelts. Once the danger has passed, or the traffic speeds up, the car will go back to its original set cruising speed, and the driver has nothing to do.
As with all cruise control systems, the driver can override the system at any time simply by touching the brakes.
