Towing Companies Busy in Kansas City

At this time of the year in Kansas City, Mo., the wintry weather is causing countless crashes which serve to keep towing companies busy.

However some of the towing companies are not legal and charge very high prices. According to some of the registered companies, there are others who listen to police scanners and rush to the scene of accidents where they offer their services.

However, once the person has agreed to have their vehicle towed, they then charge very high prices.

For example a normal tow which might cost $254 by a company approved by the city, can cost up to $1,200 by one of these illegal companies.

The companies are breaking the law, both Kansas City ordinance and Missouri state law, and they can be ticketed by police.

However, many think that it is up to the police to ensure that the towing company is legal and they do encourage people to be aware of unauthorized towing companies and suggest that people agree upon a fee prior to the tow. The police also assure that in the event that a driver is transported by ambulance or otherwise, they will call for an authorized City tow with a set upon, reasonable rate for the towing of vehicles.

New and Innovative Safety Systems

Given the number of accidents causing death and injury across the roads in the United States, car manufacturers are constantly looking for new and innovative safety systems.

One such system is called adaptive cruise control or collision mitigation. Previously, cruise control just set a constant speed for the vehicle without the need to depress the gas pedal. Now, these new systems use a combination of sensors and radar which mean that the throttle and brakes ensure you keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, which is vital if there are changes in the speed of the traffic.

In addition, if the system feels that there is a potential collision it will brake hard and also tighten the seatbelts. Once the danger has passed, or the traffic speeds up, the car will go back to its original set cruising speed, and the driver has nothing to do.

As with all cruise control systems, the driver can override the system at any time simply by touching the brakes.

Weekly checks you should you carry out on your car

Doing some basic weekly checks on your vehicle will help you to enjoy safe worry free travelling.

Tires
Check the pressure when the tires are cold and don’t forget to replace the dust caps. Visually inspect the tires for cuts and damage that can cause blow outs. Lastly check the tread depth is the minimum legal depth and don’t forget to check your spare tire and make sure the jack and lug wrench is in place.

Oil
Make sure the car is on a level surface, preferably with the engine cold. With a clean dipstick so that you can see the marks for the highest and lowest oil levels, reinsert the dipstick and check the level. It should be near the highest mark, if not, top up the oil by removing the oil cap at the top of the engine.

Coolant
The expansion bottle will have a high and low mark and again it is best to check this when the vehicle is cold as the level can fluctuate with engine temperature. Use the manufacturer recommended coolant and top up if necessary. Never use tap water in the cooling system.

Battery
Battery problems cause the most breakdowns. If your vehicle’s battery is sealed the best you can do is make sure the terminals are free of corrosion and the battery case is clean and dry. If your battery is not sealed removed the caps and ensure that water is covering the plates. Top up only using distilled water as tap water can damage the electrolyte in the battery.

Windscreen and Lights
Regularly clean your windscreen and ensure that the washer reservoir is full. Check that all your lights are in working order with no blown bulbs.
